Monika Shapiro arrived on time, unlike her visit of the day before. As previously, she flirted with Troy. They were gathered together near the elevators, as they had been eagerly awaiting Shapiro’s arrival. Today’s outfit was a green dress that fell to her knees and matched her shoes and handbag.

“I hope you’re here to tell us your client is willing to come out of hiding, counselor,” Jefferson said.

Shapiro shook her head in a slow, sad motion. “I wish that was why I was here.”

“What do you mean by that?”

Shapiro looked from face to face, finishing with Erica. Despite her playfulness in flirting with Troy, Erica detected unease in the lawyer’s gaze.

“Detective Jefferson, why don’t we all go into the conference room where we can get comfortable?” Erica said.

“That’s a good idea,” Jefferson said. “Can we get you anything, Monika? A coffee?”

“You can tell me that my client is safe. I’ve known her since she was fourteen and I like her.”

“We don’t know what’s happened to her, but it looks like she’s gone into hiding.”

“No, Sandra wouldn’t do that. She also missed a scheduled call she was to make to me last night, which is why I’m worried about her.”

“You say you’ve known her since she was a teen,” Erica said. “Did you also know Tasha Alfano, the latest victim?”

Shapiro hesitated then spoke. “I represented them both when they were juveniles. I won’t go into details except to say the charge was serious. A clever detective got the girls to blame each other for what had happened. They each believed that by giving up their friend they would go scot-free. Instead, they did six months in juvenile detention. Before that happened, I was told they were like sisters.”

“That explains the rift between them,” Owens said.

They all filed down the hallway to the conference room. Owens entered last and closed the door. When everyone was seated with Jefferson, Dobbs, and Troy on one side of the table and Erica and Owens flanking Shapiro on the other, Jefferson nodded at the lawyer.

“We’re listening.”

“My client left something in my care with instructions to let you have it if she were to go missing.”

The eyes of the investigators zeroed in on Shapiro’s purse, causing her to laugh.

“No, I don’t have it with me. The reason we were late in arriving yesterday morning is because we stopped by the bank to place the package in my safe deposit box.”

“So, it’s at the bank?” Jefferson said.

“That’s right.”

“This package, what size is it?” Owens asked.

“Fairly small, and Miss Weller had wrapped it in decorative foil, like a present.”

“Did she tell you what was in it?” Erica asked.

“No, and this is not the first time a client has left a mystery package in my care, although, it was the first time I was given two in one day.”

“She gave you two packages?”

“No, another client gave me one later in the day. I made it inside shortly before the bank closed.”

“And you just hide away their dirty little secrets, huh?” Dobbs said.
